Tane mahuta is a giant kauri tree, his exact age is unknown, but is estimated that it is between 1,250 and 2,500 years old.
The tree is a remnant of the subtropical rain forest that once grew on the North Auckland Peninsula.
Tane Mahuta is the most famous tree in New Zealand along with Te Mauta.
Tane Mahuta is located in the Waipoua forest of New Zealand.
Maori Legends say that Tane Mahuta is separator of heaven and earth, Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) and Ranginui (The Sky God), which are also his parents.
Tane Mahuta was first discovered and identified in the 1920’s then in 2002. During the drought of 2013 nearly 10,000 liters of water from a near by stream was diverted to Tane mahuta,which was showing signs of dehydration.
According to maori creation myth tane mahuta is the Ranginui the sky father of papatuanuku.
